Lucas Alan West

August 4, 1985 — May 23, 2022

Terre Haute

Lucas Alan West was born to Clyde Albert and Elizabeth Ann Roberts West in Terre Haute, Indiana August 4, 1985. Lucas fought a wicked battle with Satan in the form of drug addiction and lost that battle on May 23, 2022.

Lucas attended Rio Grande Elementary and Sacred Heart of Jesus School and was graduated from Terre Haute North Vigo where, as part of the drum corps, he lettered in marching band. His drum tutor said he was a “hot shot” drummer, and he proved it any time he humored his mother when she would spontaneously command, “Play ‘Wipeout’ for me, Lucas!”

Known to his friends as “Luke,” he was loved fiercely. His friend Alex Harvey, his “person,” offered the perfect summation: The thing about Luke is that there are so very many of us that have had the honor and privilege to call him best friend. Because that’s how incredibly big Luke’s heart was. A friend to all, a shining beacon to a sinking shipwreck, a shirt off of his back, and let’s be honest, hands full of grease while he saved many of us in time of vehicular ignorance. Luke helped any and all people because of the goodness within his heart.

Lucas was an artist at heart. His artwork, although not always legal, is abundant. Some were lucky enough to get their own personal tag. Some tags were permanent, while others may have just been left in your car’s dust. He was wry and witty, silly and quirky, quick to text a funny of the day: What do you call a native Alaskan eye doctor? An optical Aleutian. That Lucas West was a funny guy. He was also a whiz at information technology. He was a collector of strays, so the house was always filled with fur. He was a gorgeous stealer of ladies’ hearts, and a polite, respectful young man to his elders.

Lucas was smart. His intelligence encompassed the trivial and the profound. He was constantly educating himself, a practicing wordsmith and prophet. He was deep and beautiful, scarred and troubled, compassionate and forgiving, even before it was needed.

Lucas was a child of God, marked by Catholic baptism but propelled by a private spirituality that caused him to encourage, witness and celebrate others’ testimony and conversion. He was holder of a belief that has surely put him at the Heavenly Banquet.

Lucas is survived by his son Elliot Avery West, of whom he was most proud. Lucas thought Elliot his greatest accomplishment. Elliot inherited his father’s artist’s heart.

Lucas is also survived by his mother, sisters Cynthia Dyer and Morgan Thompson, brothers Patrick West and Caleb West. He is also survived by his grandparents Judith and David Storms, uncles Fred Stranahan, Claude West, Paul Michael West and John Roberts, aunts Melissa Everhart, Tanya Hess, Laura Barbour and Susan Morris. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, related and adopted: Sarah, Emma, Eva, Lyndsey, Kia, J.D., Amy, Alexis, Skyler, Kaitlyn, Makayla, Gage, Noah, Lylah, Elowen (Princess), Clementine and Carlee. He is also survived by step-grandmother Marie Roberts, step-grandmother Paula Roberts, and Elliot’s mother, Rainie Lore, and many cousins and true and loyal friends like Alex, and Dustin Taylor.

Lucas was preceded in death by his father, his maternal grandfather Charles H. “’Pa Red” Roberts, paternal grandparents Emma Lucille Hudson and Claude West, Jr., and sister Michelle Losier.

Services for Lucas will be held at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 11:00 AM, with burial to follow in Grandview Cemetery.  Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, May 31, 2022 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the funeral home. Please help cover Lucas with love by bringing your favorite marker to tag his final resting place. Also, notes of love for Lucas will be collected to send as a final good-bye.

A trust fund will be set up for Elliot. Donations can be made to Beth West on Elliot’s behalf, or to the Humane Society, or to a drug treatment program of your choice.

We mention Lucas’ cause of death in the hope that it will save a life. Heroin is a terrible task master, Satan’s handmaiden, a liar and a thief. It stole his body, his life, his potential. It took our beautiful Lucas too soon. Please, tell your children about the danger of drugs, and tell them you love them every day.
