August 13, 1933 — June 4, 2019

Terre Haute

Betty Joann Anderson Easthom, 85, of North Terre Haute, Indiana passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, June 4 , 2019 following an extended illness.

She was born in West Terre Haute on Aug. 13, 1933, to Joseph Anderson and Lulu (Brown) Anderson.

Betty graduated from Concannon High School in 1951 and on March 31, 1956, she married Homer Glenn Easthom of North Terre Haute, who passed in 2016, just short of their 60th anniversary.  Together they operated a successful business, A-1 Sanitation Service, retiring in 1995.

Surviving are her children, Gail (Konrad) Kuta of Laporte, IN, and Katherine Easthom of North Terre Haute; sister, Mildred Edwardson of Terre Haute; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings Rose Mary Flener, Alice Nickel, and Joseph A. Anderson.

A kind and caring woman with a never-ending smile, Betty was the consummate mother and friend.  She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and was especially known for her Italian beef, lasagna, banana nut cake and brownies.  A rabid sports fan, Betty  loved the Terre Haute North Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, and  NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon.

Betty had an unwavering belief in contributing to the community. Whether it was casting a vote every election day, supporting local politics, and holding local offices herself she contributed fully.  After retirement, she held the position of township trustee in Otter Creek township for 11 years and as advisory board member 12 years after that.  She was especially proud of the volunteer fire departments, considering them the best in the county!

From her early contributions as room mother at Otter Creek Elementary to her passing, Betty was active in many community organizations:  Otter Creek Elementary PTA, Opti-Mrs. Club, Terre Haute North Mother’s Club, Vigo County Democrat’s Club, Otter Creek Democrat Club.  In her later years she loved her participation in the Burnett Home Economics club and the Red Hats Society.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN on Sunday, June 23rd with visitation beginning at noon.  A short memorial service officiated by Reverend Steve Moore at 1:00PM.  Burial will take place in Roselawn Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Homer Easthom & Betty Anderson Easthom Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Wabash Valley Community Fund.
