Sharon K. Godbey Derickson, born October 11, 1952 in Clinton, IN to Elvadia and Vernon Godbey, and grew up in Libertyville, IN.
This was the life of a shy, poor, country girl who would use her mother’s flower planting spade to dig up worms and bugs in the creek that serpentined through their back yard and ride her bicycle throughout the country village where they lived. She and her family were poor, but proud people living in a four-room house without inside plumbing, which remained that way through her high school years. The outhouse still stands today in the family’s backyard. Throughout her school years, her wonderful mother (which Sharon/s husband fondly nicknamed Mama G which stuck with her the rest of her life), made Sharon’s school dresses, even when Sharon attended West Vigo High School and was voted Prom Queen and Homecoming Queen. The dresses were beautiful.
After high school Sharon entered a career in banking, starting as a cashier and advancing to the position as assistant to the bank president. This little shy, blue-eyed blonde, beautiful country girl had accomplished so much.
Sharon married a local businessman, Chip Derickson on September 28, 1991. Chip said when he first met Sharon, he felt she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Sharon and her husband were avid outdoor enthusiasts. Sharon loved to upland bird hunt, but her passion was fishing. The two of them traveled the world hunting and fishing, once to the Amazon in search for peacock bass. They enjoyed homes in Indiana, also on Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada, and a home on an island in the Everglades of Florida.
To know Sharon was to love Sharon. She was an extraordinarily beautiful woman, not only on the outside, but even more so on the inside. Her gorgeous smile was welcoming and comforting to everyone.
Sharon was a devoted and loving wife of 33 years, as well as a wonderful sister, daughter, grandmother, and friend, and her love and kindness touched everyone who knew her. She possessed a warm, kind, and gentle spirit that radiated love and compassion to everyone she met. Sharon’s true love was the apple of her eye, her husband.
Sharon loved to cook and if you were lucky enough to sit at her table, you knew that it was a true blessing. She was a very accomplished artist. Birds were her favorite objects to paint, as well as wildlife scenes. Sharon had the voice of an angel but was too modest to share with the public, but if you ever heard her, it would have stopped you in mid-step.
Sharon was a devout Christian with an unwavering love for her Jesus Christ. As Sharon’s husband states “with Jesus, through Sharon’s guidance, she molded me into the man I am today”.
Sharon is survived by her husband Chip Derickson, her brother David Godbey (wife Lou Anna) of Terre Haute, and her uncle Wesley C. Hill of New Goshen, as well as two step-sons, Dusty Derickson of Florida and Greg Derickson of Indianapolis. She is also survived by her adopted son, Chris Wilbur, eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents. We on earth lost an angel, but Heaven gained an angel.
To live in the hearts of those we leave behind is NOT to die.
