Robert Allen “Bob” Stokes

Sept 8, 1937 - Jan 3, 2020

Robert Allen “Bob” Stokes, 82, passed peacefully on January 3, 2020 at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, Indiana.  He was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, on September 8, 1937 to Robert Casmir Stokes and Edna Gyuricsko Stokes.

He graduated from Crosby High School, Waterbury, Connecticut, enlisted in the USAF in 1956 where he was a weather observer and plotted weather maps and served a tour of duty in Iceland.  He was honorable discharged in 1960.  Later he received an associate degree in Criminology from Amarillo College, Amarillo, Texas.

Bob married Carole James Stokes, May 4, 1960.  They would have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary this year.

He is survived by his wife, Carole; his son, Berry Stokes and wife Tina; grandchildren, Brandy Middleton, Rob Stokes and Ashly Stokes; great-grandchildren, Baylee, Wesley, Bella, Cohen, Payton and Raygan; and his grand dog Harley.  In addition, he is survived by his brother, Ron Stokes, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He retired from Mason-Hangar at Newport Chemical Depot as Division Manager. After retiring he volunteered as a shuttle driver at Union Hospital.  He, also, was Treasurer of the Windemere Lake Association.

Bob was an avid University of Connecticut fan often seeing him in a “Huskies”shirt and hat.  He loved to play golf earning the nickname “Woody” for the number of trees he hit and he loved to read.  He tinkered with cars, hunted, fished, bowled and worked on model aircraft.  He appreciated a good meal.  Above all, he loved his family and was very proud of them.

In keeping with Bob’s wishes, a private celebration of life was held. If friends so desire, the family welcomes memorial contributions to The Helping Hands, 960 West National Ave., West Terre Haute, IN 47885.  Arrangements are under the direction of Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN 47885.
