Listen to Obituary

Phyllis Ann (Kennedy) Mason (92), of Terre Haute, Indiana peacefully passed away on October 31, 2026, at Regional Hospital surrounded by so much family love.

Phyllis was born on June 3, 1934, in Terre Haute, Indiana to Orville and Goldie (Smith) Kennedy. Phyllis worked at the Woolworth’s Lunch Counter, Eastern Trucking as a key sort operator, Chesty Chips, Midland Glass, and Union Hospital. However, her favorite and most important job was as a home maker, mother, grandma, and great grandma. If Phyllis had her way, every one of her kids and their families would have remained living with her.

She enjoyed cooking and took pride in maintaining a beautiful flower garden. You could often find her children or grandchildren working along with her soaking in her knowledge. She spent many hours in the kitchen with her grandchildren teaching them the art of canning vegetables from the garden and making pies and noodles. She was incredibly proud of her grandbabies and attended every ball game, concert, or event possible. When she could not be there in person, she watched from her iPad. Phyllis played such a significant role in all her grandchildren’s lives that they each held an incredibly special and close bond with her.

In Phyliss’s earlier years she never missed the chance to go to garage/yard sales. Phyllis and her sister-in-law, Marie, would spend summers loading up their seven kids in the back seat of a car, spending the day finding deals and making memories.

Phyllis lived a good clean life, she was kind, caring, admired, and loved by all who knew her. Each morning, she sent individual messages to family and friends wishing them the best day and reminding them they are loved, and every evening she closed with Goodnight, love you messages. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great sport about being the brunt of so many jokes from her husband and kids (all out of love).

At just 9 years old, Phyllis met the love of her life, John Mason. They were married on July 27, 1954, at Terre Haute Bible Center. They shared sixty-nine wonderful years of marriage before John passed away on January 7, 2024. Their love and the way they cared for each other was unmatched. Together they were the glue of the family, hosting holidays, coordinating family reunions, and quietly helping in times of need.

Phyllis is survived by her four children and their spouses, Janet Mason (Alvin), David (Elaine) Mason, Jayne (Mark) Wolff, Brian (Mendy) Mason; grandchildren, Miranda Mason (Clayton Cheesman), John David Mason, Wesley Wolff, Mason Wolff; and great grandchildren, Isaiah Mason, Kyla Gustafson, David Gustafson, and Dallas Cheesman. Honorary great grandchildren, Kamden Tyson, and London Cook, who lovingly called her Momma Mason. She also leaves behind a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings and their spouses, William (Virginia) Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Dorothy Fenton, Nellie Tingley, Donald (Barbara) Kennedy, Clarence (Marie) Kennedy, Richard (survived by Betty) Kennedy, Albert Kennedy (passed in childhood), and Helen Kennedy (passed in infancy); and siblings-in-love, Cora (Jim) Nicosen, Woodrow Mason, Nell (Tom) Schillaci, Mary (Fred) Hargis, Lenora (Gene) Figg, Rebecca (Glenn) Hargis, Jean (Lee) Roach, Raymond (Shirley) Mason, Paul (Hilda) Mason.

Mom, Mamaw, Aunt Phyllis, or just Phyllis was a beautiful, sweet soul that was so loved, and certainly missed be by all.

We have chosen cremation for Mom, at which we will mix her ashes with Dad’s, so we can rest assured knowing that they are once again reunited! There will be No Public Service, we will honor her with a Celebration of Life, at a date yet to be determined.
