Phyllis Dru Witt-Hunter passed away October 31, 2020. Phyllis was born in West Terre Haute on November 13, 1930 and was raised by her parents: George John and Floy Marie Walker-Witt. She graduated from Valley High School and continued her education at Indiana State University, receiving a bachelor and master’s degree in Home Economics. She taught high school full-time in San Jose, IL and Staunton, IN for several years. She married George Earl Hunter on June 20, 1952. Phyllis lived in Japan for approximately 10 months, while George was stationed in Japan after WWII. While in Japan, Phyllis taught U.S. soldiers English and math to assist them acquiring their GED’s, which was needed to stay in the military. After her children began school, she continued to substitute teach for over 25 years in Vigo County. Phyllis was a faithful member of the Saint Mark United Church of Christ, where she enjoyed teaching adult Sunday School. She loved traveling (visited 32 countries), family gatherings, swimming, woodworking, weaving rugs on a loom, camping, playing canasta, and she was collector of everything. She is survived by her husband of 68 years and five children: John Hunter; Anne Hunter; Sarah (David) Gossett-Casey, Nathan, Travis, and Jason; Frank (Amy) Hunter-Sawyer and Jeffrey, George (Cindy) Hunter-Hailey. Proceeded in death by her parents and her two sisters: Barbara Guy and Nancy Monts. Visitation will be held on her 90th birthday at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN, from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday November 13, 2020. The celebration of life will follow at 5 p.m., which will be officiated by Pastor Teresa Higus.
