John Edward Harpold

John Edward Harpold, 83 of Terre Haute, passed away on May 4, 2026, at Union Hospital. He was born on October 25th,1942 to Paul and Juanita Harpold.

After graduating from Wiley High School, John served in the U.S Air Force from 1962-1969 rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant in record time. His high degree of professionalism resulted in his appointment to the United States Air Force Honor Guard in Washington D.C. John led a life of service to others. Following military service, John spent the next 25 years as a Vigo Co Deputy Sheriff. Retiring in 1996 as Lieutenant in charge of investigations. He continued serving in roles with the Vigo Co Prosecutors office and Community Corrections.

John enjoyed fishing and watching sports, but never more than when his grandchildren were the stars. He taught his sons how to be men of character, but his grandchildren taught him how to play and be silly. John’s favorite thing to do was spend time with his family.

He is survived by his Sons, Joseph and John Harpold (Melissa) and their mother Melinda; as well as grandchildren Sara; Kayden; and Kaison Harpold, Sister Sharon Belote, nieces Amy and Andrea and other extended family.

John is proceeded in death by his parents Paul and Juanita Harpold.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation was chosen. Funeral services will be held at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Jonathan Lafleur officiating. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations can be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, in John’s memory. Arrangements are under the direction of Fitzpatrick Funeral Home.
