Daniel “Dan” Bernard Kane, 78, of West Terre
Haute, passed away May 31, 2026, in The Gibson
Family Center for Hospice Care, in Union Hospital
with his loving family by his side. He was born
August 22, 1947, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to James
Joseph Kane and Isabelle Catherine McKinney
Kane. He was a graduate of Garfield High School.
Dan was a veteran of the United States Army who
served in the Vietnam War from 1968-1969 and was
honorably discharged in 1974. Dan began his
working career at Anaconda Aluminum/Alcan before
becoming a Correctional Officer at Putnamville
Correctional Facility. His final occupation was as a
driver for TransCare. He married Carolyn L. Maher
on June 26, 1971, after which he became a member
of St. Mary’s Church, having previously been a
member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a
mason and a member of F&AM Lodge #687 in West
Terre Haute, as well as a member of the Shriners,
and Scottish Rite. One of his favorite activities was
participating as a driver for the Shriners, transporting
children to the hospital in St. Louis. He also enjoyed
driving his golf cart around visiting with neighbors.
He loved a good game of Canasta. He took great joy
in feeding the various local wildlife, especially the
squirrels and the birds. He also enjoyed spending
quiet time with the love of his life by the river,
watching the water. Above all else, his greatest pride
and deepest joy were his children and
grandchildren. Nothing brought Dan greater joy than
being with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant
twin brothers, Patrick and Peter; his infant sister,
Bridgett Susan; and special aunt, Hannah “Auntie”
McKinney; and his special uncle, John McKinney.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Kane; his sons,
Christopher Kane (Kim), and Stephen Kane (Misty);
his daughter, Susan Kane; his brothers, James
Kane, John Kane (Joyce), Robert Kane (Patty),
Thomas Kane (Sally); his sisters, Marie Engles
(Paul), Sarah Cuvelier (Fred); his grandchildren,
Dalton (fiancé Kayla), Garrett, Kaleb, Conner, Leah,
CJ, and Halie; as well as several nieces and
nephews.
A Mass of Catholic burial for Dan will be held on
Monday, June 8, 2026, in St. Mary’s Village Church
at 11 am. Visitation will be from 9 am until the time of
Mass at the church on Monday. Burial will follow in
the St. Mary’s Village Church Cemetery. If friends
and family desire, memorial contributions can be
made to The Helping Hands, 960 W National Ave, West
Terre Haute, IN 47885, and/or The Gibson Family
Center for Hospice Care, 400 8th Ave, Terre Haute,
IN 47804.
