Charles Eugene Hunter

Charles (Gene) Hunter, 91, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026, at Gibson Hospice Care. While his family grieves his loss, they find comfort in knowing he has been reunited in Heaven with the love of his life, his wife, Helen, and his beloved daughter, Kathy.

Gene was born on November 18, 1934, to George and Helen G. Hunter. He graduated from Valley High School in 1952, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball, earning the respect of his teammates and classmates.

On April 12, 1954, Gene married the love of his life, Helen R. Kasemeyer. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and unwavering devotion to one another.

Gene dedicated his career to Western Electric, where he worked faithfully until his retirement. He was a lifelong baseball fan, and no team held a more special place in his heart than the Chicago Cubs. Whether watching a game at home or discussing baseball with family and friends, his love for the sport never faded.

Affectionately known as “Grandpa Genie,” Gene’s greatest joy was his family. He especially treasured his great-grandchildren and delighted in spoiling them every chance he got. His gentle nature, quiet sense of humor, and unconditional love created countless cherished memories that will live on for generations.

Gene also treasured the lifelong friendship he shared with his Valley High School classmate, Pete Sellers. The two enjoyed meeting regularly for breakfast or lunch, where they spent hours reminiscing, sharing stories, and solving the world’s problems. Their conversations and friendship brought Gene great happiness.

He is lovingly remembered by his son, Steven Hunter and wife, Sally; his daughter-in-law, Lynda Fuqua; his grandchildren, Amy (Corey) Barbour and Chad (Kelsey) Hunter; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Hunter Barbour, Addie Barbour, Hayden Hunter, and Greyson Hunter. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen R. Hunter; his daughter, Kathy S. Hunter; his parents, George and Helen G. Hunter; and his brother and sister-in-law, George and Phyllis Hunter.

Gene leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, loyalty, and unconditional love for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his family finds peace in knowing he is once again with those he loved most.

In accordance with Gene’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A private burial will be held at Dunlap Cemetery.
