Gregory Allen Porter, 69, of Terre Haute passed away at 7:20 a.m. Sunday August 25, 2019 in his home with his family by his side. He was born September 19, 1949 in Terre Haute to Frank Porter and Audrey Lawson Porter. He retired as a truck driver after many years of service as an owner/operator.
Survivors include: His wife Deborah Brooks Porter whom he married July 3, 1970 in Kaufman, TX; a son Frank Porter (Rachel); two daughters Michelle Conger (James) and Rebecca Flowers (Gary Flowers Jr.); a sister Sandy Chapman; nine grandchildren James Conger, Gregory Porter, Frank Porter Jr., Harley Porter, Josh Porter, Marilyn Porter, Gary Flowers, Miranda Flowers, and Katrina Flowers; eight great grandchildren and one on the way; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Frank Porter, his mother Audrey Blaine; a sister Christina Niece; and a grandson Jeremy Conger.
He was a Vietnam Veteran having served in the Army 101st Airborne Division during which he received a purple heart, bronze star, parachute badge and the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post 6574 and the American Legion Post 501 both of West Terre Haute; a member of the Former Hasbeens Chapter at West Terre Haute. He enjoyed cooking and assisting with fund raising meals and charitable events put on by the above mentioned organizations he was a member of. He collected guns and enjoyed participating in spot shoots. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday August 31, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN. Visitation will be 12:00 noon until service time Saturday. Avery Higginbotham will be officiating, and Military Rites provided by the Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. Cremation has been scheduled after all services.
There will be a meal at the Calvary Temple, 2100 N. 6 ½ St., Terre Haute, IN following the services. Anyone who would like to bring a covered dish is welcome.
